Aromatherapy Treatments can help with a range of problems from illness and injury, to stress-related conditions. No matter what your complaint, there is likely to be an aromatherapy treatment that can help.Whilst it is important that patients understand that aromatherapy cannot always cure an illness, medical professionals are beginning to recognise the benefits of treating a condition in a more holistic and natural way.
The use of aromatherapy oils is not without its risks however, and care should be taken even when using the oils externally, for an aromatherapy massage for example. Treatment that involves digestion of aromatherapy oils is something that should only be prescribed by a professional, as the plant oils can react with other forms of medication already present within the body. For instance, a patient that has been taking relatively high levels of paracetemol to treat a headache or any other ailment should not be treated with essential oils that contain certain phenols. This is because the two forms of medication are fundamentally very similar, even though one is synthetic and the other is a natural remedy, and therefore taking both together can ultimately lead to health problems.
Just as herbs are combined for use in herbal medicine, aromatherapy oils are mixed together for aromatherapy treatment. But unlike herbalism, where the herbs are prepared in an aqua-based solution, essential oils cannot be mixed in water. Instead, the oils are combined with a carrier oil, such as coconut oil or sunflower oil, or where the blend is to be consumed, a base of alcohol is employed.
There are a number of ways in which aromatherapy can be prescribed. As discussed, actually ingesting the oils is not always the best option due to potential reactions with other forms of medication. Alternative treatments include direct application through massage, or by adding the blend to your bath or simply inhaling the aroma over a bowl of water. It has been suggested by a number of experts that benefits brought about via these forms of treatment can actually be much more immediate, as the nervous system reacts immediately to smell and inhalation, where as the rate of absorption is much slower when the oils are actually digested.
