Good aromatherapy products are now really easy to find, as the practice of aromatherapy has become so popular over the past few years.
There are a wide range of different products that you can buy, from basic essential oils to bath salts, massage oils, pot pourris, perfumes, aftershaves, even mouthwash! Some of the most popular types of products are listed below:
Essential oils
These are the basis for any aromatherapy product. They can be used alone, or combined with other oils, or with other substances, for example alcohol.
Bath salts
An aromatherapy bath can be prepared by simply adding five drops of your favourite essential oil into a bowl of epsom salts or sea salts that have already been dissolved in boiling water. Make sure you do not use an essential oil that can cause irritation to the skin, and avoid any toxic oils, especially if you are pregnant or when bathing babies or small children.
Massage oils
An aromatherapy massage oil is made by adding a few drops of essential oil to a carrier oil base, usually a vegetable oil like grapeseed or coconut oil. A general guide for adult use is to have two to three drops of oil for every teaspoon (or 5ml) of base oil, although a slightly stronger concentration can be used for physical ailments.
Pot pourris
You can use essential oils to revive old pot pourris, or just add it to dried flowers, leaves and ground nutmeg to create your own.
Perfumes
Whilst there are a few essential oils that can be worn undiluted on the skin, it is always better to mix them with a carrier oil. Even when the aromatherapy oil is diluted to five percent concentration, it is still a good idea to test on a small patch of skin to check there are no adverse reactions.
Mouthwash
Essential oils can be used to create excellent mouthwashes, particularly for the treatment of sore throats, bad breath and general mouth or gum complaints. Simply take a glass of warm water that has been previously boiled, add three or four drops of fennel oil or thyme oil, and swill around the mouth for one minute or so. Spit out the wash and rinse your mouth.
